KYC Fraud: This man from Mangalore leaked all the confidential information while doing KYC from a fake website and then fell into the trap of fraudsters (KYC Fraud) and earned 6.6 lakh rupees. He had an account in Canara Bank and in the name of that bank he received a message on WhatsApp (WhatsApp Scam) asking him to do KYC. A link comes to him, through which he is asked to do KYC. Unknowingly, he clicked on this link (Digital Scam), then a fake bank website opened and the money disappeared from the account after entering the OTP.
How the person fell into the trap of fraudsters
The person received a message from a WhatsApp group named Canara Bank, warning him that his bank account would be frozen unless he KYCed his account. He was told to do the KYC through an app link. The man from Mangalore downloaded the app from that link thinking this message was legitimate. When he opened the app, the interface was exactly the same as the Canara Bank website or app, so there was no way for him to mistake it as a fraud. This page asks for personal information. His Aadhaar number, mobile number, OTP, ATM PIN, CVV number etc. are asked.
The OTP came to him on the mobile number, but he did not share the OTP with anyone. And then 6.6 lakh rupees were looted from his bank account without his knowledge, several illegal transactions were made from his account using his debit card. Money is transferred to multiple accounts. The man quickly blocked his ATM card and went to Kavur police station to file a case.
Fraud from the app itself
Fraud through application malware is on the rise. Cyber fraudsters send messages with dubious links so that people download apps from them and the app’s malware infiltrates the phone and steals bank accounts with all the confidential information. Beware of such messages. As a result, experts advise that applications cannot be downloaded from any illegal sources. You have to be careful with such messages on WhatsApp.
