University Grants Commission: Clearing the National Eligibility Test or UGC NET will no longer be mandatory for joining colleges and universities as Assistant Professors. This is what the University Grants Commission (UGC Rule) has said in the draft of the new rule. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Monday released a draft rule to radically change the rules for the appointment of teachers and vice-chancellors in colleges and universities. It is known that radical changes are being made in several cases. One of these is that from now on, the Vice Chancellor of the University (Teacher VC Recruitment) may not be an academic person as per the UGC rules, moreover, there is a discussion in the draft rules about hiring teachers-professors on contractual basis. It has even been informed that passing NET is not mandatory in the recruitment of professors. What changes are coming in the recruitment of teachers?
According to this new rule, even if a candidate has passed graduation in mathematics and post graduation in physics, he can pursue PhD in chemistry if he wants and he will be considered eligible to teach chemistry in colleges and universities as a subject of this PhD. Similarly, candidates who have cleared the National Eligibility Test in a subject other than Post Graduate or Under Graduate, can also teach the subject in which they have cleared the NET. The criteria for appointment of Vice-Chancellors has also been widened. Industry, public administration, policy making, etc. related professionals can also become vice chancellors of the university from now on. However, in this case, he must have made a significant contribution to academics.
According to this new rule, those candidates who have passed with 55% marks in M.E or M.Tech degree can be appointed as assistant professors in the university without passing any National Eligibility Test, they will be considered eligible for recruitment. However, this rule does not apply to any other matter. In that case the candidate should have 75% marks in 4 year graduation or 55% marks in graduation and post graduation and Ph.D degree to be appointed as assistant professor. Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said, ‘Bringing these changes will encourage innovation, inclusion, flexibility, dynamism in the education sector. Teachers and education workers will be empowered, quality of education will be improved and the path to academic excellence will be widened’. Basically, this change is being brought under the new education policy of 2020.
