People in Damascus are trying to store their supplies. Thousands of people have headed towards Syria’s border with Lebanon to flee the country. A resident there told AP that many shops in the capital were closed and some were still open.
Meanwhile, government forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad fell in just three days. Rebel fighters then captured Syria’s second-largest city, Aleppo. The head of this group is Abu Muhammad al-Julani. Zulani is considered to be the mastermind behind the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The civil war in Syria that started in 2011 has come under control in the past few years with the help of Russia and Iran. But in the end it was blown away by the speed of the storm. A report circulated online that al-Julani had been killed in a Russian strike last Monday. But later it was understood that it was fake news. A technique to suppress movement.
Abu Mohammad al-Julani’s real name is Ahmed Husayn al-Shara. He was born in 1982 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. His father was a petroleum engineer. In 1989, his family returned to Syria and settled near Damascus.
It is not known what Julani did after that. He came to Iraq from Syria in 2003 and joined al-Qaeda. That same year, the United States invaded Iraq. He joined the anti-American resistance movement there. Julani was arrested by the United States in 2006. He was released during the Syrian civil war in 2011. He then led the establishment of al-Qaeda’s branch in Syria, known as the al-Nusra Front.
In the early years, Julani worked with Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi of the Islamic State (IS) militant group. In April 2013, Baghdadi abruptly announced his break with al-Qaeda. Zulani then began to increase his activities in Syria.
In July 2016, Bashar’s government took control of Aleppo. Then the rebel groups moved towards Idlib. At that time, Zulani al-Nusra Front changed its name to Jabhat Fateh al-Sham. Later, Zulani formed HTS with many small groups of rebels and his own Jabhat Fateh al-Sham.
