President Yun said he will rebuild a liberal and democratic South Korea to eliminate the threat of North Korean communist power and anti-state elements. There was no other way than this to ensure the freedom and security of the people and to maintain the stability of the state.
President Suk Yeol did not say what kind of steps would be taken after martial law was imposed. Meanwhile, Han Dong-hoon, leader of the ruling conservative People Power Party, targeted Yeol for calling the decision wrong. He said that he will oppose the declaration of martial law and stand with the people against it.
Yun has been at odds with the opposition-controlled parliament since taking office as president in 2022. The ongoing impasse over next year’s budget bill between the opposition Democratic Party and the ruling People Power Party has added to the tension. In this regard, President Yun said, the National Assembly has reduced the budget necessary for the main activities of the state, drug crime prevention and public safety. It has destabilized the people, disrupted the functioning of the state and made the country a haven for drugs.
The political circles fear that this suddenly declared military rule may make the political situation of the country more heated.
