Trouble started after a gunman attacked a convoy of mainly Shia Muslims. After at least 40 people were killed, a retaliatory counter-attack began. This kind of communal unrest is happening due to decades of land disputes between the Shia and Sunni Muslims there. The Kurram region shares borders with several provinces of Afghanistan. Various anti-Shia groups are also active in that area of Afghanistan.
