G 24 Hours Digital Bureau: Recently Meta announced some of their new significant changes. This includes lifting restrictions on fact-checking and discussions about immigration, gender identity, and gender. After Mark Zuckerberg announced this decision, fierce criticism has started.
Things that can be said on TV, says Joel Kaplan, Meta’s new chief global affairs officer. That cannot be said on our platform. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said in a video that the current rules are ‘out of touch with mainstream thinking.’
Along with the announcement, Meta has also made huge changes to its Community Guidelines. As will be communicated on platforms including Instagram, Threads and Facebook, certain topics are prohibited. Notable among these changes is the ‘hateful conduct’ policy. Especially with regards to discussions of immigration and gender.

Interestingly, the meta made an important policy change. Whereas meta now allows that gender or sexual orientation, which used to be barred from being termed a mental illness or abnormality, can now be termed. Not only that, the political and religious debates surrounding the LGBTQ+ community allow Meta to use the term ‘queer’ in their context. Apart from this, Meta will also allow transgender and homosexuals to call them mentally ill. Metro spokesman Corey Chambliss confirmed to the news website Wired that the relaxed restrictions will apply worldwide.
Not only this, the Meta has significantly removed from its policy the ban on calling women ‘household objects, property or common objects’. Which means, women can then be publicly referred to as ‘households’ on social media.
Incidentally, Facebook and Instagram no longer have fact checkers. The announcement comes from social media’s parent company Meta. What was done by fact checkers, users will now do through ‘community notes’. Which is a lot like Elon Musk’s X. Zuckerberg gave this information in a video message from the United States on Tuesday (January 7).
