Jawaharlal Nehru University: Jawaharlal Nehru University fined two resident students recently. The duo were fined a total of Rs 1.79 lakh for bringing outsiders to campus and hostel rooms, drinking alcohol, smoking hookah and many other violations. These two students have been directed to deposit this fine within the next 5 days. An official notification has been issued by the university on January 8.
In the first notification, 12 unknown outsiders were seen in the hostel room of the two students and they created chaos in the hostel premises by drinking alcohol in the absence of the students. And this incident is seriously against the law of the hostel. A fine of Rs 80,000 was imposed on that student. At the same time, another fine of Rs 60,000 was imposed for the offense of allowing outsiders to enter, Rs 2,000 for drinking alcohol, Rs 6,000 for keeping induction stoves and heaters in the house, Rs 2,000 for smoking hookah, indecent violence, misbehaving with hostel staff and creating chaos. A fine of Rs 10,000 has been imposed on the two students.
The second notice said that last year on December 22 and this year on January 5. Many foreigners were present in this hostel room. Evidence was also found that alcohol had been consumed there. At that time, the warden committee and security guards tried to open the room, but none of the two students opened the room from inside. Another student was fined a total of 99,000 rupees, including 85,000 rupees for giving space to outsiders, 2,000 rupees for drinking alcohol, 2,000 rupees for smoking hookah, and 10,000 rupees for indecent use.
< p>Both the notices state that stricter action will be taken against those who fail to deposit this fine within the specified time. They may also be kicked out of the hostel. However, Kunal Kumar, former president of Sutlej Hostel, termed the levy of huge fines for this crime as extortion. He claimed, ‘In the university where the semester fee is only Tk 200, the student is being fined more than Tk 150,000 for the crime. The main reason behind this is that the two students do not support the ABVP organisation’. However, the hostel warden is yet to say anything about this.
