Israel Hamas Reach Ceasefire with Hostage Agreement after more than a year

Israel Hamas Reach Ceasefire with Hostage Agreement after more than

New Delhi: There are still reports of attacks and deaths. However, after one year and three months, Israel and Palestine’s Hamas organization finally reached a peace agreement. The two camps agreed on a ceasefire. Besides, both sides agreed to release the prisoners. Discussions were going on for several months. In the end, Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire brokered by Egypt and Qatar. America also played an important role in bringing the two sides under one roof. Donald Trump took office as the President of the United States on January 20. From that point of view, this agreement is also important for America, which has always supported Israel. The existential struggle between Israel and Palestine, however, is nothing new. Decades after decades, conflicts and bloodshed have been taking place. But in the month of October 2023, a new war started between them. Hamas fires rockets in response to Israeli aggression. And with that a new war broke out between the two countries. Since then the war is still going on between the two sides. Even though the two sides have agreed to a ceasefire, there are still reports that Israeli forces are continuing to attack Gaza. However, it is reported that the ceasefire agreement will be implemented within a few hours. (Israel-Palestine Conflict)

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani said the cease-fire agreement would come into effect by Sunday. There are still talks between Israel and Hamas on some issues. But according to the agreement-

  • For the time being, both sides will move towards a temporary ceasefire.
  • There can be no more destruction in Gaza.
  • Israeli citizens imprisoned in Gaza will be released, Israel will also release Palestinian prisoners.
  • Displaced Palestinian citizens will return.
  • The first phase of this ceasefire agreement will last for six weeks. A limited number of prisoners will be exchanged between the two sides. Israel will partially withdraw its troops from Gaza. They will allow relief to reach there.

According to the figures that have come out so far, 33 Israeli citizens including children, women and ordinary citizens are held captive by Hamas. Hamas will release them. After that, Israel will also release Palestinian prisoners. Those serving life sentences will also be released. According to statistics, Israel has about 1000 Palestinian prisoners including women, children and the elderly.

After that, Israel will begin withdrawing troops from Gaza. Their troops cannot be deployed within 700 meters of the settlement area adjacent to the border. But the military area is kept out of it. Work will progress there step by step.

According to the agreement, the Israeli army will allow Palestinian citizens north of Gaza to return home. 600 trucks can enter there every day. However, almost nothing remains of the Israeli offensive in Gaza. So even if they return, the Palestinians will not have a roof over their heads, according to human rights organizations.

The Israeli army will allow wounded Palestinians to go outside Gaza for treatment. The Rafah crossing on the Egyptian border will be opened. This work will be completed within seven days after the ceasefire agreement comes into force. Israeli forces must also withdraw from the Philadelphia Corridor between Gaza and Egypt. The corridor should be completely vacated within 50 days.

If the first phase cease-fire agreement is implemented, the second and third phases will begin. Initially, however, Israel was unwilling to give any written guarantees. They were not willing to give any indication that no more attacks would be carried out if the first phase of the ceasefire agreement was completed. A written agreement has not yet been signed. But Egypt, Qatar and the US have given verbal assurances to Hamas that they will pressure Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to sign a written agreement.

In the second phase of the cease-fire agreement, Hamas will release all Israeli prisoners, most of whom are Israeli soldiers. Israel will release more Palestinians after this. Israel will have to completely withdraw its troops from Gaza in this second phase. The Israeli cabinet will also vote on this. However, there are doubts whether the right-wing supporters of Netanyahu will agree to this.

It is not entirely clear what exactly will be done in the third phase. However, it is known that what is supposed to be done in the second phase, whether they have been completed or not, will be seen at this stage. The dead bodies will be handed over to each other. This will be followed by the implementation of a three-year or five-year plan to revive Gaza under the supervision of the international community.

There is still no agreement on who will govern Gaza once the ceasefire comes into effect. But the US has called for reform in the Palestinian government. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said that international supervision is necessary to rebuild Palestine and establish good governance there. An interim government has to be formed for that. Palestine will get help from the Arab world in security matters. Saudi Arabia has already said that they will start the work only if Palestine gets the status of a full state, which Israel has objected to. But the Oslo agreement was signed in the nineties. Israel has yet to make any alternative recommendations on Gaza.
