ISKCON in Bangladesh: Ban on ISKCON work in Bangladesh? Important

Rajeev Chakraborty: The Bangladesh High Court has restrained itself from issuing any order prohibiting the activities of ISKCON. The court said that the concerned authorities have already taken necessary steps. During today’s hearing, the Attorney General’s office presented relevant information before a bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debashish Roy Chowdhury. The court expressed hope that the government would take due precautions to protect lives and property of the people of the country as well as maintain law and order.

The order was issued based on the report of Additional Attorney General Anik R Haque and Deputy Attorney General Mohammad Asad Uddin. They informed the court that three cases have been filed regarding the murder of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif and the activities of ISKCON. Also, 33 people have been arrested in connection with these cases. The court directed the Attorney General to inform the court about the steps taken by the government regarding the recent activities of ISKCON.

Incidentally, Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested on charges of sedition on Monday. After that, the Chittagong Metropolitan Magistrate Court ordered to send him to jail custody on Tuesday. Hundreds of people gathered at the court premises ahead of Chinmoy Das’ appearance in court on Tuesday. Jai Shriram slogans were also raised in the court premises. After hearing the verdict, the court premises took on the appearance of a battlefield. Protesters kept the police prison van for about three hours. When Chinmoy was taken out of the court premises, the clash started. Police tried to bring the situation under control by bursting tear gas cells and lathi charge. Just then the angry crowd dispersed and left the court premises and gathered in front of Rangam Convention Hall. After that, the crowd started throwing bricks. Chased by the police. The crowd chased back. Many were seriously injured. The injured were admitted to Chittagong Medical College. Government lawyer Saiful Islam Alif died there.

It may be noted that a writ was filed in the Bangladesh High Court on Wednesday in the background of violence against the Hindu community. It demanded a ban on the activities of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). Besides, a state of emergency was requested to prevent ongoing unrest in Chittagong and Rangpur.
