Washington: US President Donald Trump has made a big announcement about citizenship after returning to power. He said that the right to citizenship will not be given if one is born on American soil. And after that announcement, America’s hospitals are practically in a rush. Pregnant expatriate Indians have started crowding hospitals. Before the law goes into effect, they want to give birth early, by C-section, so that their child can be registered as a U.S. citizen before birth. (US Birthright Citizenship)
Trump has announced that if you are born on American soil, you will not get the citizenship of that country. He also signed the directive that at least one of the parents must be an American citizen or serve in the American military, only then their children will get citizenship. The order will be effective from February 20. Therefore, Indian expatriate women are planning to give birth before February 20. They don’t even mind giving birth to premature babies, that is, they want to give birth before the scheduled time. (Donald Trump)
In an interview given to the Times of India, New Jersey doctor SD Ram opened up about this. He said that requests are coming to him at an unusual rate. Pregnant Indian women who are interested in giving birth through C-section. Everyone wants the child to be born before February 20. So far he has received about 20 such requests, said Dr. Ram.
The doctor said, some are pregnant for seven months, some for eight months, some for nine months. None of them are willing to wait. Even a woman seven months pregnant brought her husband along. She made an appointment to deliver the baby by C-section before the scheduled time. He is unwilling to wait until March.
But regardless of the risk, why are the expatriate Indians applying? Behind this lies the current US citizenship policy. According to the current policy in the US, if the child of an immigrant couple is born in the US, he or she will be considered a US citizen by birth. When the child turns 21, the parents will also be recognized as permanent US citizens. So there is a rush to have children before Trump can introduce new policies.
American Texas doctor SG Mukkala also expressed concern about this. He told The Times of India, “Talked to about 20 couples in the last two days. I am trying to convince them. Premature delivery puts the lives of both mother and child at risk. The baby’s lungs remain immature, underweight, and other neurological problems.”
There have been various reactions on social media. Some think that parents are willing to take such a big risk thinking about the future of the child. Some have again sneered at the ‘American Dream’. According to them, first there is a long wait to get a green card, then wait again for citizenship. Even if you go to America, you will reach the age limit of 50 to get citizenship. Some people think that there is no need for so much excitement.
The response to Trump’s announcement about American citizenship has fallen everywhere. Indian and Chinese immigrants are particularly concerned about this. However, even if Trump signs the directive, the approval of the US Congress is necessary. Cases have already been filed in various states. Again, many people have come forward to support this policy of Trump. So expatriate Indians do not want to take risks.
