Salim Reza, Dhaka: Bangladesh is constructing a high dam on the banks of the Manu River in Ali Nagar, Moulvibazar, Sylhet, Bangladesh. The embankment is being raised to protect the people there from floods. India is worried about this. Unkoti Division of Tripura, India is located next to Moulvibazar border. Local authorities there said that due to this dam in Bangladesh, India may be at risk of large-scale floods. It is known that there is a dam made by India. However, this dam built a few decades ago is much lower than the Bangladesh dam.

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha told the Rajya Sabha that he will talk to the central government about the construction of this dam in Bangladesh. Congress legislator Virajit Sinha raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha. Dilip Kumar Chakma, Divisional Magistrate of India’s Unkoti division, told reporters, “It seems that the Bangladesh embankment is permanent and high. It is located right next to the zero point of the border. They are building it for flood control. But our embankment, which is 350 yards from the zero point, is quite low. The matter should be brought to the attention of the higher-ups and India should talk to Bangladesh about this.”
Magistrate Dilip Kumar recently visited a portion of the 1849 pillar in Devipur, Tripura. There he said, “Bangladesh’s raising of dams may cause severe flooding in Kalishahr.” He claimed that the Bangladesh government is building the dam without any discussion with India.

Local residents and an expert claimed that Bangladesh is violating the Indira-Mujib agreement by building this dam. which was signed on March 19, 1972. The expert said there is an agreement between India and Bangladesh that neither country can build any infrastructure within 150 yards of the border’s zero point.
