Salim Reza, Dhaka: The 23rd Dhaka International Film Festival has started with the slogan ‘Aesthetic Films, Mindful Audience, Enlightened Society’ under the initiative of Bangladesh Rainbow Film Council. The festival was inaugurated on Saturday in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. This festival will continue till January 19. As always, 220 full and short length films from 75 countries including Bangladesh are being screened in the Asian Competition Section, Retrospective Section, Bangladesh Panorama, Wide Angle, Cinema of the World, Children’s Film, Spiritual Films, Short and Independent Film and Women’s Film Section in this year’s festival. Among these films, a total of 44 films from Bangladesh are being shown, including 4 films from India.

Bangladesh Interim Government Telecommunication and Information and Broadcasting Advisor Nahid Islam was present as the chief guest at the opening ceremony on Saturday. Apart from that, Ambassador of China Yao Wen and Director of International Department of Film Administration of China Zhu Yang were also as special guests. On the opening day, the band Jagar Song performed music. Chinese movie ‘Moon Man’ directed by Chiu Zhang was shown as the opening film this year. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and China, an exhibition of Chinese film posters was inaugurated. China is the country focus of this year’s festival.
The film exhibition venues in the festival are the main auditorium of the National Museum of Dhaka and the Kavi Sufia Kamal auditorium, the National Gallery of the Shilpakala Academy of Dhaka, the Allianz French Auditorium of Dhaka, the North South University of Dhaka and the Green University Auditorium of Dhaka. All the exhibitions in this auditorium can be enjoyed by all for free. As the number of seats is limited, seats are being allotted on a ‘first come first served’ basis. As part of the festival on January 12 and 13, the ‘Eleventh International Women Film Makers Conference’ on the role of women in films will be held on the third floor of Samson Lounge of Dhaka Club.
In this conference, women filmmakers of Bangladesh will get a golden opportunity to gain experience through exchange of ideas with local and foreign women filmmakers and personalities. Here, women creators will discuss the obstacles and ways to overcome them with world-renowned women creators. The negative and positive role of women in world change and the ways to solve the obstacles will emerge in this conference.

There are some special exhibitions in memory of the martyrs in the July-August coup of Bangladesh. Seven short films will be screened on January 12, 15, 16 and 17. Apart from this, as part of the festival, a painting exhibition has been organized at La Galerie de Alliance Française in Dhaka. It includes the works of young and old artists. Masterclass is going to be held for the third time on January 17-18. Zhu Yang, Director of International Department of China Film Administration, Serbian film scholar Professor Dragen Milinkovic, Norwegian film producer and distributor Augie Hoffert and Bangladeshi cinematographer Rashed Zaman will speak in this masterclass held at the Cineplex Auditorium of National Museum in Dhaka. The 23rd Dhaka International Film Festival will open on January 19 Mustafa Sarwar Faruqi, Advisor to the Ministry of Culture of the Interim Government of Bangladesh will be the chief guest on the closing day.
