Kolkata: There is no end to unrest in Bengal. One after another incidents of atrocities on minorities are coming to the fore. Hindu houses and shops are being vandalized selectively. Several temples are also being vandalized. Complaining to the police did not help. In this situation, BJP MLA Agnimitra Pal posted a video on the X handle (the authenticity of the video was not verified by ABP Anand) and claimed, “Fatwas have been issued by fundamentalists to ban women from going to market in Gopalganj.” So the question is, is Bangladesh on the way to Afghanistan? Is the shadow of the Taliban-rule seen in Bangladesh? Women’s freedom is being eroded in the age of Nobel Peace Prize winner Yunus?
Posting the video, Agnimitra wrote, ‘A heinous fatwa against women in Bangladesh has been declared parallel to the tyrannical regime in Afghanistan. The most surprising thing is that it happened in Gopalganj. That Gopalganj is the home of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Radical Muslims have banned women from going to market in Gohardanga of Gopalganj. The fatwa is effective from Thursday. Imposing such regressive restrictions on a district that symbolizes Bangladesh’s freedom struggle is shameful and alarming.’
A shocking fatwa against women has been declared in Bangladesh, drawing unsettling parallels to Afghanistan’s oppressive regime. Even more appalling, this has occurred in Gopalganj—the birthplace of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the home of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.… pic.twitter.com/K3Hch1l1f9
