Salim Reza, Dhaka: Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, ranks first in the list of cities with polluted air in the world. Dhaka’s ‘Air Quality Index’ score was ‘445’. which is considered ‘very unhealthy’. Iraq’s Baghdad is second on the air pollution list with a score of 444. Third place is Karachi, Pakistan, with a score of 248. In fourth place is Hanoi, Vietnam, with a score of 216. In fifth place is Mongolia’s Ulaanbaatar, with a score of 212.

An ‘AQI score’ based on daily air quality gives people information about how clean or polluted the air in a particular city is and whether it poses any health risks. An air quality between 101 and 150 is considered ‘unhealthy for sensitive groups’, an AQI score between 150 and 200 is considered ‘unhealthy’. A score between 201 and 300 is considered ‘very unhealthy’, an AQI score of 301 or higher is considered ‘risky’, posing a serious health risk to residents.
The Advisory Council of the Interim Government has directed the relevant technical authorities to implement the recommendations of the Bangladesh Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to control air pollution in all of Bangladesh including Dhaka. In the meeting of the advisory council of the interim government of Bangladesh, instructions have also been given in this regard. Later, in a press release, the Cabinet Department of Bangladesh informed the matter.

According to the press release regarding the meeting of the advisory council of the interim government of Bangladesh, the recommendations of the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change should be implemented from the competent authorities at the technical level in determining the steps taken to control air pollution in all of Bangladesh, including Dhaka. In order to control air pollution from brick kilns, the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change has to discuss with the finance department, internal resources department and related persons to decide the future action plan. At the same time, the Advisory Council has also ordered the Bangladesh National Board of Revenue to take initiatives to expand the use of air purifiers by reducing the current duty.
