Salim Reza, Dhaka: Awami League, the main political party of Bangladesh, still does not see any hope of turning around politically even after 5 months of the ouster. So far, the party’s top leaders have been advising the activists to be patient and monitor the situation. However, after January, it is reported that party leaders may be instructed to turn to politics.
Talking to several leaders of Awami League in Dhaka, it is known that the situation is not yet favorable for the party leaders and workers. Leaders and activists have to continue with severe adverse conditions and life risk.
Those leaders complained to the Bangladesh representative of G24 hours and said that there is an attempt to wipe out the Awami League. All over Bangladesh Awami League leaders and activists are being subjected to unprecedented torture and repression. Mass arrests are being made. No one can come publicly for fear of arrest. Normal life is far away, you can’t even walk in public. They are getting arrested when they go public, and some people are being threatened with arrest. Even if there is no case, many leaders and activists of Awami League are afraid of arrest.
They also alleged that Awami League president Sheikh Hasina and other party leaders have been given one case after another. Those who do not have a case in their name are being arrested and included in the case. Awami League activists are being arrested indiscriminately. Along with the police in Bangladesh, the political opponents are also repressing the leaders and activists of Awami League. Awami League activists are being brutally attacked in various parts of Bangladesh.
The Awami League government collapsed on August 5 last year in a coup d’état caused by an intense anti-discrimination student movement in Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina resigned from the post of Prime Minister that day. After his resignation, he quickly left Bangladesh and took refuge in India. Currently, Sheikh Hasina is staying in New Delhi. On that day, Awami League leaders and workers at all levels quickly went into hiding. Among them, many of the party’s leaders and activists at different levels, including many top-level leaders, left Bangladesh and migrated abroad at different times.
Awami League became non-existent after the leaders and activists went into hiding and the party is still in the same state. After the fall of the government, starting from party president Sheikh Hasina to the district, upazila, union and ward levels of Bangladesh, thousands of leaders and activists of Awami League and its affiliated organizations have been sued. Many leaders from top level to district upazila, union level, former ministers, state ministers, MPs have been arrested and are in jail. Around 250 cases have been registered in the name of Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. Some of the top leaders have more than half a hundred cases against them. More than half of the leaders and activists who have been sued have had more than one case, some have even four or five cases. Leaders of the group told G24 that cases are still being filed in the name of many.
In this situation, the party’s policy-making level leaders feel that the conditions for coming to the field politics or turning around politically have not yet been created. They do not see any possibility that the situation will return to normal for them soon. Can’t give the workers any hope at this point except to advise them to patiently monitor the situation. However, the policy makers of the party are said to have started thinking of slowly turning the activists towards politics. What should be done in this regard is being considered. Some of the leaders of the party said that some directions may come in this regard after January.
A mid-level leader of Awami League in Dhaka told G24 Hours Bangladesh correspondent on condition of anonymity that the activists are still spending their days in fear. There are cases, attacks are happening. Arrested and entered into the case. Inhuman torture is going on. Attempts are being made to wipe out Awami League.
