Salim Reza, Dhaka: In the ongoing war in Myanmar’s Rakhine state, the country’s insurgent group, the Arakan Army, has taken control of the town of Maungdoo. The entire 270 km Bangladesh-Myanmar border is now under the control of the Arakan Army. Meanwhile, the Arakan Army has imposed an indefinite ban on navigation in the Myanmar part of the Naf River bordering Bangladesh and Myanmar. After the ban, a warning has been issued for navigation in the Naf river in Bangladesh. BGB patrol has been increased in this incident.
Bangladesh Teknaf Upazila Executive Officer Sheikh Ehsan Uddin G told 24 Hours Bangladesh correspondent on telephone that since the side of the border has been occupied by the insurgent Arakan Army, we have maintained vigilance at the border so that no illegal infiltration takes place. The Arakan Army, a rebel group, has been waging a war against Myanmar’s junta government for more than eight months. Security analysts in Bangladesh say that in this ongoing war in Myanmar, the position of some organizations including Arakan Rohingya Army-ARA and Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army or Arsa, the Rohingya subsidiary organization of Rakhine state, was on the side of the junta forces. Due to this, the control of the bordering Arakan State under the control of the Arakan Army has raised fears of renewed Rohingya infiltration and prolonged repatriation of Rohingya from Bangladesh.
Sarwar Azam Manik G, a senior journalist in Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh, told 24 Hours Bangladesh correspondent that the issue of Rohingya repatriation is becoming more complicated and more difficult for Bangladesh. Besides Mangdu, Arakan Army has claimed to take possession of Buthidong and Paletawa in Bangladesh-Myanmar border area. However, the Myanmar military has not yet said anything about establishing control of the Arakan Army in Rakhine State. Since the beginning of this year, there has been a continuous war on the Bangladesh-Myanmar border. Several hundred members of the Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) fled the fierce fighting and took shelter in Bangladesh. Later they were sent back to Myanmar.
Teknaf upazila executive officer of Bangladesh Ehsan Uddin said, we have taken all measures to stop unwanted travel at the border. That’s why miking is being done to raise awareness. He said, we have issued a warning that no boat should cross the border of Myanmar in the Naf river of Bangladesh. We are keeping an eye that no one comes here across the border. In this case, small boats are allowed to move in the Naf river with caution, but the movement of big trawlers and big ships has been banned, said the upazila executive officer. In the emerging situation, patrolling activities have been intensified in the Naf river on the Bangladesh border.
The local administration informed that the naval patrol has also been strengthened to dominate the dangerous areas of the Naf river and the existing islands in the territorial waters of Bangladesh. In the face of attacks by the Arakan Army last February, the leaders of some Rohingya organizations were arrested by Bangladesh police after taking shelter in Bangladesh with weapons. The local administration of Cox’s Bazar district of Bangladesh says that there is a fear of new Rohingya infiltration into Bangladesh.
