According to a recent US media survey, 59 percent of Bangladeshi people prefer Pakistan. On the other hand, 53.6 percent people prefer India. The survey was conducted in October. The survey asked 1,000 respondents to give their opinion on specific countries by ‘voting’ them on a scale of 1 to 5. 1 and 2 of the scale correspond to ‘like’ and 4 and 5 correspond to ‘dislike.’

According to the survey results, 28.5 percent of the respondents ‘dislike’ Pakistan. On the other hand, India’s ‘dislike’ score was 41.3 percent. Among the neighboring countries Bangladeshis most ‘dislike’ is Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Respondents rated Myanmar at 59.1 percent on the ‘dislike’ scale and 24.5 percent on the ‘like’ scale. In recent years, more than 1 million Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar have sought refuge in Bangladesh, fleeing persecution by the Myanmar army. Among the other selected countries, the United States received the highest number of votes on the ‘liking’ scale. The United States received 68.4 percent, while China received 66 percent, Russia 64 percent and the United Kingdom 62.7 percent.

1000 respondents were selected for the survey in keeping with the demography of Bangladesh. There were equal numbers of women and men, of whom 92.7 percent were Muslim. A little more than half of the respondents were under the age of 34 and about a quarter were urban.
