Salim Reza, Dhaka: Professor Muhammad Yunus, chief advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh, has urged the Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, to resolve the unresolved issues of 1971 to advance Dhaka’s relations with Islamabad.
During a meeting with Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at a hotel in the Egyptian capital Cairo on Thursday afternoon on the sidelines of the D-8 conference, Professor Yunus said the issues keep coming up. Let us resolve those issues moving forward.

In response, Sharif said Bangladesh, Pakistan and India had settled the issues in the Tripartite Agreement of 1974, but if there were other unresolved issues, he would be happy to see them. Prof. Yunus said it would be better to settle the issues once and for all for future generations.
They agreed to strengthen ties between the two countries through increased trade and exchange of sports and cultural representatives.
A message received in Dhaka said the two leaders expressed their desire to expand cooperation in new areas such as the sugar industry and dinghy management. Prof. Yunus held discussions with Sharif on matters of mutual interest, including the revival of SAARC, a key feature of his announced foreign policy after taking charge as the head of Bangladesh’s interim government. do
Professor Yunus, a 2006 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, also outlined his government’s plan to carry out ‘necessary reforms’ and hold general elections before mid-2026. He said he is leading a consensus-building commission for dialogue on reforms.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for developing strategic ties between Dhaka and Islamabad. Sharif said, we are really looking forward to strengthen our relations with our brother Bangladesh. He welcomed the initiative of Professor Yunus in the revival of SAARC and thanked Bangladesh for working on the possibility of hosting the summit of the regional body. Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited Professor Yunus to visit Pakistan at his convenience.
