Pakistani diplomatic sources also say that Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar will visit Bangladesh next month. The upcoming visit is a landmark move that underlines the warming ties between the two countries since the ouster of the government in August last year.

Pakistani diplomatic sources also say that this is going to be the first visit of a Pakistani foreign minister to Bangladesh after 2012. In a press conference in Islamabad, Ishaq Dar said that he will visit Dhaka in February at the invitation of Bangladesh’s foreign adviser.

On the day, Ishaq Dar briefed reporters on major foreign policy developments and the government’s achievements and future challenges. The foreign minister of Pakistan also confirmed that the chief advisor of Bangladesh, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus also accepted Pakistan’s invitation to visit Islamabad on a mutually agreed date.

Earlier in 2012, Hina Rabbani Khar was the last Pakistani foreign minister to visit Bangladesh. At that time he visited Dhaka to invite the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed for the D-8 summit of the alliance of eight developing Muslim countries.

Pakistani diplomatic sources say relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have been strained during Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year tenure since coming to power in 2009. The Awami League leader has not reciprocated Pakistan’s multiple attempts to establish ties with India.

But relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh have improved considerably since Hasina was ousted in August last year and fled to India following a bloody coup in Bangladesh. A number of developments have also been made at the highest level between the two countries. Besides, Bangladesh has also lifted the ban on Pakistani products, allowing for an increase in bilateral trade. Besides, the two countries have also started direct trade by sea.
