Salim Reza, Dhaka: India’s foreign secretary, Vikram Mishri, who is visiting Dhaka, said that the Indian government is interested in improving relations with the interim government of Bangladesh and in strengthening the relationship between the two neighbors. Vikram Mishri said, ‘There is no second thought except to increase the relationship. We see it as a win-win for both countries.’ Discussing mutual interests, Vikram Mishri said, ‘We want to start again from where we were.’ In the one-hour meeting, minority issues, disinformation, ousted dictator Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India, regional cooperation and the July-August uprising in Bangladesh were discussed.

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri said, ‘India’s relationship with Bangladesh is very important. We have to work with the current government.’ Bangladesh’s chief adviser to the interim government described the relationship between Bangladesh and India as ‘very strong’ and ‘close’. He said that in recent times, some clouds have formed a shadow about the relationship between the two neighbors. Professor Yunus sought India’s help to remove this ‘black cloud’.

Bangladesh’s ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is now staying in India, also came up in the discussion. Describing the brutal and corrupt dictatorship of the last 15 years, the Chief Advisor of the Interim Government of Bangladesh to the Indian Foreign Secretary said, ‘Our people are worried because he is giving a lot of speeches from there (India). It’s exciting.’

India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri said he monitored the events in Bangladesh almost every hour during the July-August mass uprising. The chief adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government gave a detailed account of how students, workers and masses united to end Hasina’s corrupt regime in a mass coup in July-August.

He said, ‘Our job is to keep the dreams of the youth alive. This is a new Bangladesh.’ He gave a brief outline of the reforms undertaken by the interim government of Bangladesh. Vikram Mishri said Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was at the forefront of foreign leaders who welcomed Professor Yunus after he took over as Principal Adviser. Referring to the media narrative and the Indian government’s perception of India-Bangladesh relations, he said, ‘We wish you success’.

“It is a misconception that India has a relationship with a particular political party in Bangladesh,” Vikram Mishri said, “India’s relationship with Bangladesh is not for any particular party, but for all.” During the meeting Prof. Yunus called for closer bilateral cooperation in flood and water management and India’s response to its initiative to revitalize SAARC. “We want to build a prosperous new future for all of us,” said the chief adviser to the interim government of Bangladesh.

India’s foreign secretary said India continues to work with SAARC, although there are some obstacles. The Chief Advisor to the Interim Government of Bangladesh on Minority Issues said that the Interim Government is committed to ensuring the safety and security of every citizen and protecting the rights of all irrespective of religion, caste, race and gender. He said, ‘We are a family. We have to work together.’ Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Mishri said India doubled the number of visas for Bangladeshis last month and will increase the number in the coming days. ‘We want to take our relationship forward,’ he said.
