Dhaka: After the end of Sheikh Hasina’s tenure, one after another changes in Bangladesh. Khaleda Zia’s son Tariq Rahman was acquitted in the blast case when the safety of minority Hindus is in question. The High Court of Bangladesh released 21 people including the working president of BNP in the 2004 grenade blast. Now it is heard that Khaledaputra may return to Bangladesh from abroad. (Bangladesh News)
Two decades ago, an Awami League rally on Dhaka’s Bangabandhu Avenue was lobbed, killing 24 people. Hasina survived for a short time. 49 people including Tarekris were earlier convicted in that case. Since then he was out of the country. But this time he was released by the High Court of Bangladesh. And Tariq Beksu’s acquittal has sparked excitement among BNP supporters. BNP Secretary General also visited Tarek abroad recently. (Tarique Rahman)
Lutfuzzaman Babar, the former minister of state for home affairs of Bangladesh, was also named in the case along with Tarek. 19 people were sentenced to death in that case. 19 people, including Tariq, were sentenced to life imprisonment. 11 police and army officials were also jailed. On Sunday, the hearing of their application was going on in the bench of Justice Ekeem Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain of the High Court. Besides, the application for execution of death sentence was also rejected today.
All those who applied and those who did not, were acquitted. The court said that the charge sheet, on the basis of which the trial of the case was started in 2011, was illegal. In 2018, the Fasttrack Tribunal gave judgment in that case. But this time the punishment was rejected. All were released. It is also believed that Tarek may return to Bangladesh politics this time.
There are already questions about releasing everyone in the grenade attack. Attorney General of Bangladesh Mohammad Asaduzzaman said that they will give the judgment and instructions of the High Court first. Whether an appeal will be filed against him or not will be decided after seeing everything. However, since the fall of Hasina’s government, the politics of Bangladesh has been changing one after another. Khaleda has also been released in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. He was convicted in that case in 2018. But due to the anti-reservation movement, Khaleda was released on the orders of the President when Hasina left Bangladesh.
