Dhaka: Allegations of widespread irregularities in elections during Sheikh Hasina’s tenure. The Election Commission of Bangladesh is going to start an investigation on that. They will find out where the mistakes were made. In particular, investigations are about to begin on the 2014, 2018 and 2024 elections. Controversy surrounds those three elections. Bangladesh’s Dhaka Tribune newspaper reported that an investigation into Hasina’s election is about to begin. It is known that in the recent meeting of the commission, a decision was taken to investigate the previous three elections. Election Commissioner AMM Nasiruddin has instructed the Election Commissioner of 10 regions. He has called for a report on what was wrong in the election process. (Bangladesh Election Commission)
Allegations surfaced over the general elections of 2014, 2018 and 2024. Those three elections are also considered as the most controversial elections in the history of Bangladesh. Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) boycotted the 2014 elections. A one-sided and unopposed election was held in Seber, which is recorded as a Benazir incident in the history of Bangladesh.
There is also controversy surrounding the 2018 elections. Accusations of cheating came to the fore. Some also refer to that election as ‘midnight election’. Seva’s BNP and other parties won only seven seats. After this, BNP and like-minded parties did not participate in the 2024 elections. It is also alleged that Hasina’s Awami League fielded its own people as a fake candidate as the opposition, on the basis of which Hasina’s party Awami League seized power for the fourth time in a row.
After the fall of the Hasina government in Bangladesh on August 5, there were demands for an investigation into the previous elections. After the reshuffle in the Election Commission, that demand became stronger. From ordinary people to prominent circles, the media, the demand for investigation is raised from all quarters. The demand for amendment in the election process was also raised to restore the confidence of the people.
The Election Commission of Bangladesh has said that they are determined to conduct independent, free and fair elections in the country. The Election Commissioner ordered to shake off all previous customs and strive for that goal. He said, “The Election Commission is committed to regaining the trust of the people through transparent elections. Everyone should be ready to hold elections in a short period of time.” Several revisions have already started for the 13th election. Unless the government or the court issues a ban, there is no bar to the Awami League from participating in the election, the Election Commission said.
Mohammad Yunus, chief adviser to the Interim Government of Bangladesh, said that general elections may be held in Bangladesh at the beginning of 2026. However, there are doubts whether he himself will participate in it or not. Because Yunus said, he did not become the chief advisor of the interim government of Bangladesh by his own will. Circumstances forced him to take that responsibility. Yunus also said that he will return to his work after the election.
