Today, the nation will once again celebrate the Great Victory Day with the emergence of sovereign Bangladesh on December 16, 1971 and the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s fascist regime on August 5, 2024 after a bloody liberation war of 9 months. For the first time in history, Bangladesh got the second ‘Victory Day’ in a year.
Sheikh Hasina fled to India in the face of anger from the angry masses for over 15 years of dictatorial rule and persecution of dissidents. After the downfall of the dictatorial government this year, the nation will celebrate the day with renewed vigor and enthusiasm as the nawajatra of Bangladesh. After half a century of independence, the countrymen are calling this period as ‘second independence’.
Commemorating the moment when Pakistani forces surrendered and Bangladesh became an independent state on the world map, Victory Day celebrations will begin today with 31 gunfires. In the morning on the occasion of Victory Day, the President of Bangladesh first visited the Martyrs Monument of Savare National Memorial in Dhaka. Sahabuddin and then the chief advisor of the interim government of Bangladesh. Muhammad Yunus laid the wreath.
Students from various political parties, socio-cultural and professional organizations and educational institutions of Bangladesh paid tribute to the martyrs. The national flag is hoisted all over Bangladesh including government, semi-government, autonomous and private institutions of Bangladesh. Important buildings and structures of Bangladesh are decorated with lights. The program of the great victory day is celebrated with discussion meetings and milad and doa mahfils. Today is a public holiday.
On the occasion of Victory Day, the President and Chief Advisor of Bangladesh greeted the countrymen in separate messages and paid deep respect to the martyrs of the Liberation War. Meanwhile, on the occasion of the day, the leaders of various socio-cultural organizations and political parties, including BNP, the main political party of Bangladesh, gave separate messages. They paid deep respect to the martyrs of the liberation war and prayed for the forgiveness of the souls of the dead.
