Ambizionione grant for Dr. Antonio di Maio – Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering

Lana Josipovic awarded Best Reviewer Award – Department of Information

Dr. Antonio di Maio is an advanced postdoc in mobile networking and distributed artificial intelligence at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Bern. From September 1, 2025, Dr. DI Maio and his Ambizionione project on the D-ITET from the Distributed Computing (Disco) group under the direction of Prof. Dr. Roger Wattenhofer looked after.

In his research project, Dr. Di Maio examine how artificial intelligence optimally executed and can be distributed via a large number of mobile, resource -limited, wireless communication devices with detection functions. In particular, Dr. DI MAIO Novel data-controlled methods for optimizing the collaborative, distributed training and the inference of machine learning models with limited computing power and communication via the Internet of Things. In addition, he will research new approaches to continuous adaptation of the architecture of such distributed models in order to create a balance between task performance and resource consumption. He will also examine methods for an efficient exchange of knowledge between devices and models. This project provides for an environment in which a large number of small devices that run lightweight machine learning models are distributed over a wide area, which requires intelligent methods to orchestrate limited resources and intermittent connectivity through opportunistic communication. Dr. Di Maio will also investigate how several wireless devices can jointly create precise data -controlled communication models based on analytical methods.

Welcome to the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, Dr. Antonio di Maio!
